CHARLES HEATH QUARTET

Originating from Chicago, Charles “Rick” Heath IV is a versatile and internationally renowned musician, educator, and producer. He currently serves as the drummer for piano-jazz legend Ramsey Lewis and is the producer and founder of the Ken Chaney Scholarship Fund, which provides college and jazz-camp scholarships for young jazz musicians and maintains a free monthly mentorship jam session for young musicians and the community.

Heath taught music in Chicago Public Schools from 1999-2007 before being asked to join Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones’ national touring production of the Broadway hit musical The Color Purple as principal drummer from 2007-2010. He is now an adjunct professor of jazz drum set at Columbia College and UIC.

Although he is passionate about educating young people and serving the music community, Heath is just as dedicated to his own performance capabilities. He plays everything from gospel to blues and jazz to Latin music and has performed and recorded with musicians including Ramsey Lewis, Phillip Bailey (of Earth, Wind & Fire), Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ken Chaney, Donald Byrd, Robert Irving III, and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Always leading with a passionate heart and a cutting-edge approach, Heath continues to break barriers in his career as a musician, mentor, educator, producer, and humanitarian.
