Considered a master trumpeter/flugelhorn player, Bobby Lewis is known for his lyrical style and warm sound. As a leading figure in Chicago jazz since 1961, he continues to appear as the leader of his own bands at jazz clubs, festivals, and concerts in Chicago, around the U.S., and internationally. Expert in all jazz genres from traditional to avant-garde, Lewis has created and led numerous critically acclaimed ensembles, including EARS–Jazz of all Eras and The Forefront trumpet ensemble. 

In high demand among leading entertainers, Lewis served as musical director and featured soloist with Peggy Lee and accompanied Tony Bennett during his Chicago engagements. His “played-with” list includes The Jack Teagarden Sextet, Claude Thornhill, Tex Beneke and the Modernaires, Benny Carter, Marion McPartland, Henry Mancini, Curtis Mayfield, and Jerry Butler, and he has accompanied some of the world’s greatest jazz and pop singers, including Al Jarreau, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Judy Garland, Mel Torme, Sammy Davis Jr., and Harry Belafonte. 

Lewis has released 14 CD recordings as a leader and has received numerous awards, including two music composition fellowship grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. He was named Musician of The Year in 1997 by the Del Segno Musicians Club of Chicago. He has a master’s degree in music performance from the University of Wisconsin.
